File Preparation
-
What is bleed?
In printing, “bleed” refers to part of the artwork that extends slightly beyond where the cards will be cut. It’s essentially a bit of wiggle room in case the cutting isn’t 100% perfect.
Software such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Canva have built-in settings for bleed. We require ⅛” or 0.125” of bleed on all sides. If you’re using Photoshop, you’ll have to set up your file to be ¼” larger than the intended trim size.
-
How can I get my black to print a rich black?
If you have a black background in your file, please make sure that the CMYK is a “rich black”. If the CMYK is only 0/0/0/100, it will appear as more of a greyish black. For a dense, rich black we recommend a CMYK build of 60/50/50/100.
This only applies for backgrounds or large areas. Smaller type or lines should actually be 0/0/0/100.
Please never use 100/100/100/100 as this is too much ink and will not print well.
-
Do you offer design services/templates?
We do not offer design services and ask that you provide ready-to-print files with your order.
See our file prep page for more information on how to prepare files and download templates. We do not currently have any pre-designed templates though this is something we hope to implement in the future.
If you have any questions about file prep or would like us to take a look at your files, please send us an email. We’re happy to help!
-
Do you print with Pantone colors?
No, we do not offer spot color or Pantone color printing.
We print digitally with CMYK inks only. For best results, please prepare files with all colors in CMYK. Any spot colors in your files will be converted to CMYK for printing and may not match the intended Pantone color exactly.

Edge Color Questions
-
Can each lot have a different edge color?
No. If you’re combining lots into one cart item, all lots must have the same edge color. If some cards should have different edge colors, they must be ordered separately.
-
Can I use multiple colors on the edges of a card?
Yes we can apply different colors to the edges of a card. There is an extra cost for this and it may not be possible with every order so please email us first before ordering.
-
Can edge color be very light or pastel?
We can mix light edge colors, however please keep in mind they will not be very noticeable, especially when seen on just a single card.
-
Can edge color be white?
If no edge color is added, the edges will be the color of the paper. I.e. a white paper will have white edges. If you choose a darker paper like Grocer Kraft or Stardream Gold, edge color will be made darker when applied. We cannot use white ink for edge color on dark papers.
-
What Pantone Colors can be mixed?
For Custom Edge Color we can mix any Pantone Matching System Uncoated color. We cannot mix pastels, neons, custom metallics, or textile colors.
-
Will a Standard Edge Color match the color in my design?
See our Standard Edge colors on our Edge Color page. Please note that colors can vary slightly between batches and might not look exactly the same as it looks on-screen. If you have a specific color you’d like to match, please choose Custom Edge Color.
-
Do you offer metallic foil edging or gilding?
We do not offer foil edging or gilding. Our metallic edge colors use a shimmery metallic paint(not reflective like foil).
-
How is Edge Color added?
Edge color is hand-mixed to match your desired color as closely as possible, and is painted onto the edges for a full-coverage finish. But we can’t give away too much! 😉
-
Can I add edge color to any card - including detailed die cut shapes?
You can add edge color to almost any card. If your die cut shape has small gaps/sharper edges, we may not be able to apply edge color.
-
Standard vs Custom Edge Color?
We offer our standard edge colors which are preset colors for you to choose from. If you’d like a color we do not offer, you would need to order a custom edge color.
-
Can I order a custom edge color?
Yes, custom edge color can be found in the dropdown on the order page. Please provide a CMYK or pantone color for us to reference in the notes section of your order.

White Ink Questions
-
What is White Ink used for?
White ink is best on Grocer Kraft, but can also be used on Desert Storm, Stardream Gold, and Stardream Silver. White Ink can be used on it’s own or under other colors to help preserve their vibrancy on the other papers.
White ink is not necessary for our white/off-white papers, as anything white in your file will knock out to the color of those papers.

Custom Die Cutting Questions
-
What is the turnaround time for custom cut cards?
Production takes about 4-7 business days for most orders. However with digital cutting, each card is cut individually and the more complex the shape, the slower the knife must cut. This causes production time to vary greatly depending on the quantity and complexity of the order.
-
What if I just want a custom size rectangle?
If all you need is a custom sized rectangular card, there’s no need to add Custom Cutting to your order. Simply select the next size larger from what you need and specify the actual size in the order notes.
-
How detailed can the cutting be?
The smallest diameter hole we can cut is about 0.1”. We recommend smoothing out sharp corners. If you’re not sure about your design, please send us an email with your design and we’ll take a look.
-
What custom cut category should I choose?
We divide custom shapes into 3 categories for pricing purposes. Round for circles and ovals only, Simple for very basic shapes, and Detailed for everything else.
If you’re not sure which category your design fits into, email us your file and we’ll let you know. -
What is custom cutting?
We use a digital cutting machine for our custom-cut cards(think large-scale Cricut). This is different from using an actual metal die or laser cutting. Digital cutting is much quicker and more cost-effective for smaller quantities than manufacturing a metal die.

Soft Touch and Silk Laminated Questions
-
Does lamination affect print colors?
Yes, colors will look different after being laminated. Soft Touch tends to make colors slightly more saturated. Black backgrounds will become a bit richer too.
-
Are laminated cards waterproof?
Our laminated cards are water resistant on the surface, but edges are paper which will absorb water.
-
Can laminated cards be written on?
Laminated cards are not recommended for writing on. Some pens and markers will work, but the ink will often bleed and fade over time.
-
Are laminated cards fingerprint-resistant?
Soft Touch and Silk Laminate make a card very durable and protect the print from rubbing off or smudging. Fingerprints can show, especially on dark colors.

Paper Questions
-
Can your papers be written on?
In general, most of our uncoated papers are OK to write on.
We do add a light coating to most prints prevent the ink from rubbing off. This coating can make it harder to write on with some pens. You can request that we skip this coating though keep in mind the printing will be more likely to rub off.
Coated and laminated papers are difficult to write on and ink may bleed over time.
-
Soft Touch vs. Silk Laminate
Soft touch has a more velvet-like feel. Silk laminate is still soft and matte, but more comparable to silk-like feel. Read more about our laminated cards on our Laminated Papers page. We offer foil on our soft touch cards only.
-
Do you offer recycled papers?
Yes, we offer several recycled papers from the Neenah Environment line.
Neenah Environment: Grocer Kraft and Desert Storm contain 30% or more recycled fiber.
Neenah Environment 100PC: White and Natural are 100% recycled.
